It was requested that, if possible, Scouts wear a water proof  type of shoe/boot. This boy says in front of everyone that he only has one pair of shoes. If this is the case he may ruin his only pair.

Why not ask your community?

One of our Troop's most successful fund-raisers is the collecting of deposit bottles and cans. A week before the collection we distribute a flyer like the one at the end of this post. We return the next week and collect the containers.

I always ask for contributions of used camping gear and clothing on a "Wish List". In the winter, warm clothing and water-proof boots move to the top of the list but are included year-round. Donors who need a receipt for tax purposes call for a pick-up, but most donors just leave the gear with the deposit containers.

Scouts who participate in fund raisers earn a "credit" of 1/2 of the camping fee, and the additional money is divided among the participants and credited as cash in their Scout Accounts to be used for camping gear.

We are a high-adventure Troop in which all physically fit Scouts (regardless of age) are allowed to back-pack, tent in the snow, canoe on moving water, rock climb, etc, provided that they have the right gear. For this reason we discourage wasting their money on BSA Scout Pants, since Nylon "Zip-Offs" are cheaper and more useful. This makes it possible to use our Activity Uniform as a METHOD in the OUTDOORS, where it belongs.

We also have a Uniform Bank. A volunteer sews the standard patches in the proper places and we charge the Scouts $20 for their first used shirt. $15 of this is a deposit which can be returned when they leave the Troop. Trade-ups for larger sizes are free as they grow. Patrols in which all members wear both their Scout Shirt and Troop Activity Pants for the entire campout earn recognition and privileges.

Sometimes we organize Saturday Patrol Tours of the local thrift stores and used sports equipment stores, looking for the otherwise expensive gear that is required for our particular style of camping. Water-Proof boots are usually around $6. Ugly $4 used snow pants, or $3 out-of-style formal wool pants can be worn hidden under their "Zip-Offs."

Almost all of the Scouts in our Troop ("Kewl" or "Popular" boys included) wear used gear. Scout Shirts and Activity Pants that bear scuffs and mended rips are a status symbol, and are worn with pride at Courts of Honor.
