Hold Court of Honour as soon as possible after Summer Camp and discuss lessons learned. SM to be ready with Ideas and Suggestions. Themes for camps: Just good camping for new Troop; Cooling; Exploring; Boating; Pioneering; Woodcraft, etc.., or any combination of these. Court of Honour, makes choice of, say, three, leaving more definite decision later when site and progress in Troop can be considered. Choice then provides main theme or themes for next six months work plus inclusion of normal test work. Say Pioneering is choice; whole Troop makes sure of Tenderfoot knots, lashings and other extra knots: Models are built during winter. Other subjects can be dealt with similarly, basic work often neglected. Many failures in past, due to this, Scouter's job in meantime is to inform Group Council and Group Committee. Group Council considers allocation of gear and property as between Colony, Pack, Troop and Crew, also repair and purchase of new gear, etc... Group Committee obviously concerned with finance, but not limited to this. Can help finding ideal site, can provide transport; can help by provision of gear on spot to save unnecessary transport. There is no end to what a Group Committee can do if allowed to join in this snowball effort. About this time courteous to bring in own AC and/or AAC(s); these can help, too, if only with advice. Easter and Spring Bank camps provide opportunities of assembling and testing some isolated work done at widely separated Troop and Patrol meetings. Final choice of theme(s) can now be made. NOW is the time, if not before, to inform parents of date, place, cost, gear required, etc... Start a Camp Bank, if not earlier and keep eye open for special cases - finance, school, work, etc... FinallyLook on camping as our trump card, which it is. Not only for Scouters and Scouts, but parents and others who can be interested. Arrange PARENTS and Supporters Day; fix up coach travel (?) as a party and attractive programme including meals and refreshments at camp. Traditional Training Australia |
